Related Matters

Release Date: 3/18/2025

Improved Feature — Available to All Users

IP matters don’t exist in isolation — and now your docket doesn’t have to act like they do. We’ve improved Related Matters to make it easier than ever to build, navigate, and understand the connections across your entire IP portfolio.

What It Is

Related Matters is an enhanced section within each matter that lets you link IP matters together and navigate between them with ease. Whether you’re connecting a licensing agreement to its licensed mark, tying an opposition to the matter it challenges, or linking a fully docketed matter to a reference-only file, Related Matters gives you a connected network of case files — all accessible from within the matter itself.

What You Can Do With It

Link matters with meaningful context. Connect any two IP matters and define exactly how they relate — whether that’s a licensing relationship, a parent-child hierarchy, an opposition, or any custom relationship that fits your workflow.

Define custom relationship types. Go beyond generic links by creating relationship labels that reflect how your team actually thinks about your portfolio, such as “Parent,” “Opposition to Matter,” or any other descriptor that adds clarity.

Leverage reverse relationships. When you define a relationship between two matters, the link appears on both sides automatically — so both matters reflect the connection without any duplicate data entry.

Navigate your portfolio instantly. Jump directly between related matters from within a matter record, turning what was once a manual search into a single click.

Connect any matter type. Link fully docketed matters with reference-only matters, bridging your active portfolio and supporting records in one cohesive view.

Why It Matters

IP portfolios are webs of relationships — marks tied to licenses, patents linked to continuations, oppositions connected to the matters they challenge. Without a structured way to capture those connections, critical context lives in people’s heads or gets buried in notes fields. The improved Related Matters feature changes that by turning your docket into a navigable network where every connection is explicit, visible, and easy to act on. Custom relationship types mean the links you create reflect real-world legal and business relationships — not just generic associations. And with reverse relationships surfacing automatically on both matters, your entire team always has the full picture, no matter which record they’re working from.
